Corporate Controller
Established 30 years ago, Westbank is private real estate development practice, headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. We are dedicated to the creation of inspiring, mixed-use projects, concentrating primarily in our core cities of focus: Vancouver, Toronto, Seattle, Tokyo and San Jose. Our body of work includes residential, hotels, retail, creative workspace, district energy, net zero carbon initiatives, affordable housing, exhibitions and public art, with over $50B of projects completed or under development. As our practice has evolved, we have assembled a collection of cultural enterprises including restaurants, gyms, spas, music venues, private member clubs, fashion, dance schools and food halls, known as the Westbank Ecosystem, which we weave throughout our projects. We bring this ecosystem to life through collaborations with some of the most talented artists, architects, designers and entrepreneurs in the world.
Westbank is seeking a Corporate Controller whose attributes must include a strong technical accounting background, with an ability to identify and address issues in a wide range of real estate and other operations, including IFRS, ASPE, US GAAP, partnerships, co-ownerships, REITS, US and overseas operations, corporate income and commodity tax, regulated utilities and not for profit. The candidate must be accustomed to regular change and challenge and is capable in providing a mix of both hands-on detailed work with managerial oversight, when required.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
• Consolidation and Audit
o Oversee the staff member responsible for the preparation of the annual consolidated working papers and financial statements of the corporate parent company including all supporting working papers, providing direct involvement, where required
o Coordinate all audit activities for 30 plus audits and review engagements of individual projects within the Westbank group
o Prepare and oversee books and records for the corporate parent company within the Westbank corporate structure
• Cash Flow and Finance
o Manage short term (3 – 6 month) cash flow requirements for the Westbank group, identifying and projecting all corporate cash flow requirements and determining cash sources
o Providing support to the Finance department in negotiating and administrating all loan documents, maintaining an ongoing status of all existing and potential loans
• Technical Support and Other
o Provide accounting technical support for the Property Management, Project Development and Corporate entities, including advice on new corporate structure plans and agreements
o Assist in the set up of the accounting systems, policies and procedures for new operations or entities
o Evaluation of existing and future Accounting ERP needs, with the intention of proposing and implementing a company-wide system conversion
o Reviewing agreements, identifying accounting, tax, reporting, cash flow and insurance requirements for dissemination of knowledge
o Supporting the accounting team in the identification and resolution of day to day issues involving systems and controls, accounting and tax, approval and contract
• Operations and Supervision
o Work with all different departments within Westbank to develop and maintain accurate and timely reporting, setting up policies, systems and staffing for new branches, when required
o Provide support to all accounting staff in project development, property management and corporate to ensure ongoing efficient accounting operations of a team of 35
o Review of financial statements internally prepared by accounting staff
Qualifications:
• Strong accounting technical knowledge in all areas of IFRS, ASPE, consolidation, foreign exchange, real estate
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Advanced computer skills as well as proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
• Capable of advanced Excel or data structure and data manipulation works for report generation purposes
• Strong organizational and managerial skills, ability to adapt to multiple demands, set priorities and achieve results on a timely basis
• Ability to grasp accounting and legal technical concepts quickly
• Analytical thinker and ability to readily grasp new concepts and adapt to a fast paced, ever-changing environment
• Ability to work in a number of different environments and personalities, including construction sites, operations, corporate head offices, owner managed
Preferred qualifications include:
• Experience in real estate property management and project development accounting
• Experience using Yardi and Timberline accounting systems
This position continues to evolve as the Company expands and adapts to a changing environment. It is therefore subject to ongoing change and demands someone that is willing to adapt to these changing demands.
The successful candidate will be CPA designated and will have a minimum of 5 years of increasing accounting experience and responsibility with a comfortable understanding of the above noted facets of the industry environments. Compensation is dependent upon experience.
